Our Heroes’ Reunion

On the production of Three Paths, the title scene of Episode Six, on the ghost ramps of Seattle’s 520 freeway.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been fifteen months since we last saw our heroes Marion and Claire on the front page of nightzero.com, but it has indeed. The originettes were a fun and adventurous diversion, but it’s good to be back with the main storyline, back with these familiar faces that we’ve come to know over the last four years.

This scene, entitled “Three Paths”, was shot on part of an abandoned freeway segment here in Seattle. Back in the sixties it was destined to be a shortcut between the 520 and I-90 freeways, but that plan was abandoned after only a small causeway and some onramps were constructed, so here it sits. There are three scenes in Episode Six that use portions of these “ghost ramps”, and they were shot completely differently.

More photos from behind the scenes of the Episode Four protest shoot

And here’s the final photo-retrospective on the epic “protest shoot” from the fourth episode of Night Zero, “Insecurity”. Our “Friday” photo for this post is the group photo from the end of the second day, and although it doesn’t feature everybody involved in the shoot, is still the most satisfying photo I have ever organized in the history of the Night Zero project. I’m so proud of everybody who made it possible, and can’t wait to show you when the story goes to print in Night Zero: Volume Three (coming 2011!).

On the early concepts and location scouting for the protest shoot

I don’t recall exactly the expression he used at the time, but when Alexander first dropped hints of the plot developments in episode four it was in the form of grinned warnings: the story was taking a dire turn, and it wasn’t gonna be easy. I don’t even remember how long ago it was that these first bits of conversation came around, but already by January of 2009, when episode two was just halfway through production, the schedule was cognizant of the episode four “protest shoot” which would require the full resources of the entire Night Zero family. Looking back through conversations and emails, hardly a meeting goes by without a drop-in reminder of our upcoming challenge. As a writer, Alexander is entitled to be protective of his unfinished works and usually preferred to have complete drafts before sharing them, but in this situation we had numerous conversations over the first half of the year, well before the script was in full draft, to enable the pre-production work to incubate.

Down By The River

On finding and securing a shoot location at a shipping container yard on the Seattle waterfront

The beautiful location for this “scratcher catchers” scene is on the bank of the Duwamish River in south Seattle, just before the river opens up into Puget Sound and the Seattle waterfront. Many thanks to Jim, Jody, and Randy at ConGlobal Industries for making our shoot possible.

Early drafts of the script were pretty flexible in terms of where this scene could take place, but for the most consistency with the Night Zero lore, there is no place with older or more deadly scratchers than the docks. Despite the danger, it’s naturally also very profitable for skullhunters to frequent such locations, which is why the house is not far from here.
