Exodus

On the prologue of Night Zero’s final serial episode, and why the name “Exodus” was chosen for this final chapter.

And so begins the final episode of the Night Zero serial “City Planning,” episode six. “Exodus.”

After so many years, I felt it would be helpful to begin the episode with a recap of sorts, an explanation of all that precedes this story to refresh our readers on where the New City and its heroes stand. This was not part of the original script, and only came into consideration after the prologue had been shot, so it was an interesting task to cut the dialogue and filler portions from that scene and use it as illustration for the voiceover. Something we’ve never tried with Night Zero before, but I’m pleased with how it turned out.

These past two weeks have also given the Night Zero team a full workload with conventions, with our fourth annual presence at the wonderful Emerald City Comicon and our first bout at the more eccentric Sakura-Con. At both shows our new book Night Zero: Origins was a smashing hit, buoyed by it’s accessibility as a stand-alone title in combination with its remarkably low price point. It’s just twenty dollars, less than the cost of a celebrity signature at the convention or two tickets to a movie, and contains seven self-contained vignettes from the Night Zero world plus behind-the-scenes, director’s notes, and more. And like all our books, these are proudly printed in the USA, so you can support American workmanship and help the economy while getting some quality graphic novel stories at the same time. We start shipping next week, click here to order now.

On Night Zero’s third engagement at the Emerald City Comicon, including the famous free HDR photobooth and the premiere of Volume Three.

Last weekend, Night Zero once again came out in force at Seattle’s ninth annual Emerald City Comicon, and what a weekend it was. Our third year presenting at this show, ECCC’s first three-day schedule, and me flying in from Europe less than two hours before the doors opened. It was an absolute blast, and I give a great “thank you” to all the comic and culture fans who visited us this year, as well as to the incredible and tireless Night Zero team for once again putting on such a good show. The entire gallery from our HDR photobooth can be found at http://www.nightzero.com/eccc2011

Two years ago, ECCC 2009 was our very first convention experience,  and seems so long in the past. We had little knowledge of culture conventions, and while the idea was vaguely tossed around we had never seriously considered presenting at a show. It was only after having dinner with Jim Demonakos, creator and organizer of ECCC, for reasons completely unrelated to comic books, that it became a real consideration. Towards the end of dinner the topic of Night Zero came up, I explained the project and our then just-released Volume One, and he encouraged us to grab a booth and come share our work with the world.

From the Night Zero team, thoughts on the 2010 Emerald City Comicon

A great thank-you the thousands of fans who came by to visit at the Emerald City Comicon this year. The Night Zero team had a great time meeting fans new and old, applying free makeup effects, shooting in the HDR photobooth, and sharing the joy that is what we do.

For those who missed the email or missed ECCC 2010, the Night Zero photobooth gallery can be found at Night Zero’s Flickr page.

Below are some words from the team members who were at the show, sharing their thoughts of the crazy, incredible weekend.

Approaching Midnight

On the origins and story development of the “Midnight” vignette

Two quick announcements to start: first, we will be spending the weekend at the Emerald City Comicon here in lovely Seattle, so if you’re attending this year’s comic culture celebration, make sure to stop by #708 for some free gore makeup and an HDR photobooth; and second, I’m pleased to announce the launch of a Night Zero sister site that focuses on the production and behind-the-scenes of the project, check it out at http://www.thephotographicnovel.com.

Regular readers of the NZ blog know that one of my favorite topics of discourse is the “origin story” of a particular piece, and the Midnight vignette is no exception. Of all the vignettes to date, this one was the most difficult to get through conception, because it was not stemming from any particular need or opportunity. Jezebel started with “trapped on Night Zero”, Sisters started with “backstory of the Nazarov women”, and Special Delivery started with “shipping container yard”, but Midnight had no core inspiration. Lack of an anchor may seem freeing, but it’s hard to build up from nothing.

On the upcoming release party and comic conventions

These are busy times for the Night Zero team, and we’ve got some very exciting events coming up in the next few months. Production on episode four continued with a shoot at the old Sandpoint Way Naval Base last weekend, including some exciting smoke and fire effects for a dramatic scene near the end of the episode. This brings the shooting schedule of the episode at around 80% complete, although curiously it’s the middle and end portions that are complete, and the opening scenes that remain to be shot. Episode four, titled “Insecurity”, will begin its online run in four weeks.

On Night Zero’s second full production year, 2009, and all that was learned and accomplished

My original design was to write a retrospective on the production of episode three, but as its conclusion coincides with the end of the year, it seems more appropriate to reflect here upon all that was Night Zero in 2009. I’ll try to avoid re-hashing too many of the specifics that I’ve already covered in posts throughout the year, and instead try and remain reflective of the experiences themselves… but no promises.

The year started right off with Jezebel, our first vignette, with three brand-new cast members and an ambitious shoot schedule. It was a learning experience about freezing temperatures, confined spaces, wonky costumes, and wow it was a blast. Even though episode two hadn’t begun online yet, we had already trumped the best of its shoots (thus far), and that’s really what would come to define the next twelve months. If 2008 was the year of “what the hell are we doing?”, then 2009 would be the year of “how can we do this better?”
