On Night Zero’s second full production year, 2009, and all that was learned and accomplished

My original design was to write a retrospective on the production of episode three, but as its conclusion coincides with the end of the year, it seems more appropriate to reflect here upon all that was Night Zero in 2009. I’ll try to avoid re-hashing too many of the specifics that I’ve already covered in posts throughout the year, and instead try and remain reflective of the experiences themselves… but no promises.

The year started right off with Jezebel, our first vignette, with three brand-new cast members and an ambitious shoot schedule. It was a learning experience about freezing temperatures, confined spaces, wonky costumes, and wow it was a blast. Even though episode two hadn’t begun online yet, we had already trumped the best of its shoots (thus far), and that’s really what would come to define the next twelve months. If 2008 was the year of “what the hell are we doing?”, then 2009 would be the year of “how can we do this better?”

Sisters: A Retrospective

Final thoughts on the challenges and lessons of shooting the “Sisters” vignette

The journey of the Sisters production has been a long and challenging adventure, now come to an end. Next week we return from summer break to our regularly scheduled serial comic.

Each of the three Sisters shoots had a different combination of cast members and a different production aide on hand, but there was a great deal of consistency from one day to the next which I feel helped keep the cast and crew focused and comfortable. Each day started with a 7:30am crew call, to meet out front of the Galway Arms and unload all the production materials onto the patio. Two of the three days were metered parking on the street outside the Galway, so additional time was given for drivers to find off-street parking where they would be safe for the entire shoot.

A Vignette by Any Other Name

On approaching production of the “Sisters” vignette and it’s unexpected growth, compared to the minimalism of its predecessor “Jezebel”

Regular blog readers are familiar with how the original concept for Night Zero was a series of semi-independent stories, with crossover casts and occasionally intermingling storylines. That idea was shelved in favor of the six-episode serial arc, but stayed alive in the form of the vignette. A way for the team to try out new techniques, cast new faces, and get a break from the day-to-day production of the serial comic, the vignette concept was that of low-overhead and low-expense productions, short shoot schedules, and quick turnarounds. “Jezebel” and the untitled vignette were both perfect examples of this, each being shot in two short sessions with minimal crew, the former costing less than $30 and the latter costing nearly nothing to produce.

When “Sisters” was developed this last April, it was supposed to follow suit. It was to be a short story, a quick production, and it was supposed to accomplish three things. First, I wanted to explore the personalities and relationship of Dariya and Nadia, who are very complex characters with unfortunately little screentime in the serial arc. Second, I wanted to flex our action muscles and see what we could do. The last time we shot a real “action” scene was the very first day of production on Episode One over a year ago, and the next time we’re scheduled to shoot will be in the middle of downtown Seattle with a cast and crew of nearly one hundred people. Naturally, I wanted to give the team a little bit of practice before then. And third, I wanted to get some up-close and personal time with our zombies, which also have relatively little screentime in the serial arc.

A Tale of Two Sisters

On the inspirations for the “Sisters” vignette, and the evolution of its story from concept to production

It’s my great pleasure to bring this brand-new vignette to the Night Zero community, and I hope you’ve been enjoying it. This flash into the past of the Nazarov girls is both groundbreaking and trend-bucking in many ways, which I’m happy to share with you today.

Immediately notable from the production side is the speed with which this vignette came to life. In early April the idea came to do a story about the sisters, and after a number of very different scenarios, the concept began to come together as you see it. Production was fast-tracked amidst a few large Episode Three shoots, a cast assembled from some incredibly talented local actors (who had been long waiting for such an opportunity), and then costumes, props, and a shoot location brought together in swift order.
